Ramona’s face froze. She pulled Paisley outside the room and said, “Don’t mention this in front of her.”
“Alright,” Paisley agreed.
She glanced at Ramona and suddenly realized, “You're out of money, aren't you?”
Ramona looked embarrassed. “I never had much to begin with. The jewelry | used to wear was all from my family
or Madison. Besides that, | hardly ever had any cash on hand.”
“Now that the Barkers has cast us out, they only allowedto take the clothes off my back. Everything else?
They wouldn't letbring a thing.”
Paisley observed Ramona’s anger. Ever since descending the mountain to follow Adelaide into battle and
returning to the capital to deal with these troubles, she found her patience had
grown.
In the past, she would have likely stormed off in frustration upon hearing Ramona'’s situation, but now she
wanted to be kind.
She understood Ramona'’s fury and terror.
Ramona had always been used by her family, never granted a shred of genuine trust.
She once viewed Hunt, her mother, and Wilorina as a tightly knit family of four, but Hunt betrayed her.
Now, an outsider claimed her own sister sought to kill their mother-no wonder she struggled to believe it.
Rather than getting angry, Paisley calmly said, “Believe what you will. The werewolf doctor's testimony wouldn't
slip past the Ministry of Justice if it were false. As for why Wilorina could manipulate him? They had a
relationship.”

was a breeder? She had no choice! She suffered enough without you dragging her nthrough the mud and
turning us against each other!”
Paisley said, “Fine. Believe what you want. I've done my part by telling you. If you ever need to borrow money for
business, ctoanytime.”

Paisley often measured friendships by money, a Stephens family trait said to be learned from a prominent figure.
She had no limits with Adelaide-whether borrowing or giving, she offered whatever she had.
As for Avery, after that punch today, he'd get nothing from her.
Ramona, having schemed with Paisley before, was owed a few thousand in camaraderie.
Yet she coldly replied, “I don’t need it. Leave. Our affairs are none of your concern. Leave now!”
Paisley glanced at her. “I'll wait until Galvin arrives.”
“Don’t wait!” Ramona’s expression was icy. “We can’t accept your kindness. | don’t see any hidden schemes
here, nor do | understand them. But no one will cbetween our family bonds!”
“Are you crazy?” Paisley’s patience snapped, her usual arrogance resurfacing.
With a cold sneer, she said, “Why would we schagainst you? What use are you to us? You know nothing of
Madison’s manor or your sister's undercover roles in various families.”
“Compared to even the lowliest servants at Madison's manor, you're worthless-they’re all being interrogated
now. Do we need you?”
“Besides, you claim we deceived you on the Moon Newborn Festival plan, but without the deception, you'd have
spilled everything to Hunt, and he'd have told Madison. Would our plan have succeeded? Would your mother and
others have been rescued? Focus on the outcome, not the process.”
“Your mother is safe now—the result
you wanted. The deception was
necessary. If you hadn't trusted your
father so blindly, we wouldn't hays

believed it, just as you don't believe
now that Wilorina traded her body to

left to say. I'll leave once Galvin

Ramona’s shoulders shook as tears dropped heavily to the ground.
Paisley, seeing her cry, didn’t offer comfort but instead looked toward the entrance-where was Galvin?
After a while, Ramona spoke in a
stuffy voice from crying, “When we

Wilorina said. Thinking back, she
must have known. But | just don't
understand why she would do this.”

At that moment, Galvin walked into the alley.
Paisley waved immediately. “Galvin, over here!”
Galvin spotted them but was puzzled as to why they weren't waiting at the Barkers’ gate. Still, she approached
and asked, “Why are you here?”
