Chapter 1653:
The DNA test results flashed in her mind—Kylee wasn’t her father’s daughter. So, she had no more concerns. She
felt reassured, humming a soft tune as she walked back toward the house, her steps light.
At the Grand Plains General Hospital, Belinda had been busy all afternoon. Her shift was nearing its end, but duty
had pulled her to the emergency department one last time.
When she finally emerged from the room, it was well past the tfor her to get off work. As Belinda was
heading toward the elevator to leave, her gaze suddenly fell on a bench at the entrance of the department.
Someone was sitting there.
The moment Belinda spotted the figure, she instinctively walked over.
“Are you alright?” she asked gently.
The woman was Carola. Even though Carola was wearing a mask obscuring most of her face, Belinda recognized
her immediately.
At the sound of Belinda’s voice, Carola looked up, her eyes dim. “Belinda... it’s you,” she replied, her voice barely
more than a whisper.

Belinda’s brow furrowed. “What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?”
Carola gave a faint shake of her head. “Just a slight fever—nothing serious.”
Unconvinced, Belinda reached out and laid the back of her hand against Carola’s forehead. The heat pulsing
from Carola’s skin startled her. “You're burning up—this must be well over 103°F. This is serious.”
Carola gave a weary sigh. “At first, it was just a mild fever. | figured I'd sleep it off, but it only got worse over
time.”
Belinda was about to say something when the hospital loudspeaker crackled to life, calling out Carola’s name.
“Con, I'll accompany you,” she said, slipping an arm around Carola to guide her toward the consultation
room.
Inside, the attending doctor looked up, surprised to see Belinda. “Dr. Wright?”
Belinda smiled and gestured toward Carola. “This is a friend of mine. She’s running a high fever; could you check
her temperature?”
“Of course,” the doctor replied without hesitation and took Carola’s temperature.
The thermometer displayed a reading
of 103.1°F. It was clear Carola wasnt
