Chapter 1068: Before she could finish, Eric's hold on her chin grew fierce, making her flinch in pain.

"Don't dress it up so prettily! Be straight with me! You're ready to risk Joy's safety and insist on leavingis it because of my background? Because I'm no longer a Flynn?" Tears welled in Eric's shadowed eyes, his voice quivering with anguish. “Is it because I'm a fraud in your eyes, someone you now deem unworthy?" His words roared with despair and fragility.

Hadley's brow furrowed as Eric's pain lay bare before her.

If admitting it would finally make him let go, perhaps it was worth it.

She drew a deep breath and nodded. "Yes, that's it." The words had barely escaped when Hadley gasped in agony, her jaw throbbing as if fractured under Eric's grasp.

"Hadley!!" Eric seemed unaware of her pain, lost in his own grief and torment. His gaze burned with unrelenting intensity. "Well played!" His bloodshot eyes glistened with tears that spilled freely.

Hadley stilled. He... was crying? "Hahaha..." Eric's laugh was raw and bitter. "This is how you treat me? How could you betraylike this? I thought... I thought..." He had believed Hadley was different.

Even if her heart no longer held love for him, Eric had clung to the notion that she stood apart from others, that she wouldn't despise him and walk away because he wasn't really a Flynn.

How mistaken he was! Eric's arms fell limp, releasing her. "Go," he whispered, his voice low and sharp.

Hadley faltered, uncertain if she had heard him right. "What?" "I said go!" Eric's voice thundered as he raised his head, his glare piercing. "Get out of my sight!" His eyes, once warm and wet, now gleamed with a cold, hollow distance.

Hadley lingered for a moment, as if the tears she had seen in Eric's eyes moments ago were merely a trick of her mind.

Gripping her bag tightly, she turned and hastened toward the door.

Just as her hand touched the door handle, an unbidden urge made her pause and glance back. Softly, she said, "Take care of yourself, for Joy's sake." With those final words, she stepped out.

The door clicked shut, and a tempest of sound erupted within.

"Ah!" Eric's furious cry echoed as he upended the table, sending the red diamond ring skittering across the floor. The room spiraled into disarray.

But it wasn't enough. The anguish clawed at him, relentless.

What could possibly quell this torment?

Outside, Hadley stood still, her eyes squeezed shut as the elamer from within reached her ears. She drew a deep breath, then let it out slowly. She didn't turn back.

The skies above had cleared that day. As Hadley emerged from the hospital the sunlight pricked at her eyes.

Her eyes were faintly red, yet a subtle smile curved her lips. It was done. This time, it was truly... over.
