“No,” Melvin said, his lips tightening. She hadn't shared anything about her life recently.
Gerard explained, “Her dad thought she was too old to be single, so he set her up on sblind dates after she
got back. One guy was a spoiled rich man she didn’t like. He kept bothering her.”
“When was this?” Melvin asked, completely unaware.
“About ten days ago,” Gerard said. “She mentioned he even showed up at her office a few days back.”
“I'll keep her safe,” Melvin promised.
Gerard wanted to ask more, but Melvin hung up.

her world felt peaceful and steady.
Thinking she might be keeping her worries hidden, Melvin leaned back and quietly reassured her. “Now, I'm your
boyfriend. Whatever is on your mind, you can tell me. I'll help you through it.”
The words caught Jessica off guard. She blinked in astonishment at him. Without hesitation, her hand shot out
and pressed against his forehead. Maybe he had a fever and was talking nonsense?
