Chapter 1409

Chapter 1409:

Roland turned to her, exasperated. “Why did you interrupt me?” he whispered.

“Because you were about to say something foolish,” Lena replied in a low voice.

“Do you even know what | was going to say?” he shot back, crossing his arms.

Lena arched an eyebrow. “After all these years, | can read you like an open book.”

He huffed, silenced, and turned his gaze to the window.

Melvin glanced at his watch, urgency creeping into his voice. “She plans to get married at nine tomorrow

morning. You might want to call her tonight, ask her to chome.”

Lena and Roland exchanged a look, a silent agreement passing between them. Moments later, they excused

themselves and climbed the stairs, leaving Melvin alone in the quiet living room.

Roland paused at the top, glancing down at the floor below. He leaned close to Lena, his voice a whisper. “She

did not even take her ID. How does she plan to get married?”

Lena nudged him gently. “Call her and find out.”

Roland shook his head, his lips pursed. “She is bluffing Melvin. No need to call.”

Lena’s eyes narrowed. “And how would you know what is in her head if you do not ask? What if she needs us to

play along with sscheme?”

She knew Jessica better than anyone. Her daughter had loved Melvin for years—giving up so easily and marrying

someone else out of spite did not add up.

There had to be more to this.

Roland wavered, his fingers hovering over his phone. “Should I call her, then?”

Lena sighed, pulling out her own phone. “Never mind. | will do it.”

Roland said nothing.

Ten minutes later, they descended the stairs, their faces unreadable. Melvin straightened, his body tensing as he

searched their expressions for clues.

They settled across from him, and Roland spoke, his voice measured. “We spoke to Jessica. We accept her

decision. We agree to her marrying Jack.”

Melvin’s breath caught, his composure cracking. He had not expected this. His lips parted, a storm of emotions

flickering across his face. “But he is not right for her,” he said, his voice tight.
