Chapter 1636:
These were details he hadn't known.
“After his birth, he had an infection... He was in an incubator... He couldn't stop crying, but when I held him, he
calmed down immediately...” Elissa’s voice grew tighter with every word. “My mom said... a child without a
father couldn't stay around... She took him from me... | couldn't stop her...”
Ernest's chest constricted as he pulled her into a deep embrace, his hand cradling her head.
He kissed her hair and whispered, his voice hoarse, “I'm sorry.”
He had failed her. He had failed Locke. He had failed them both.
“Locke... Locke...” Elissa murmured her son’s name, her fingers clutching Ernest's sleeve. Her tears blurred her
vision, and a faint, bittersweet smile crossed her lips.
“That name... | chose it for him.”
“You did?” Ernest froze, genuinely surprised.
When he had found Locke at the orphanage, the director had said the boy had always been called Locke. He had

But it turned out, it was Elissa who had named him.
“The nyou gave him kept him safe and helped him grow strong and healthy,” Ernest murmured.
Elissa pressed herself against Ernest's shoulder, her cries rough and ragged, as if heartache leaked out with
every breath.
Pain pounded through her head, and her eyelids drifted closed. Her body nearly gave out, but he caught her
before she could fall.
“Elissa?”
Ernest swept her up without hesitation, lifting her into his arms. With steady steps, he carried her to the bed and
settled her down as gently as possible.
Seeing her grip her head in distress, his brow creased in worry.
“Laney!” He called for the caretaker at the doorway.
“Yes?” She stepped in right away. “What is it, Mr. Flynn?”
“The medicine—where is it?”
“I'll bring it now,” Laney replied, rushing out.
Every night, Elissa needed her pills, but she had dozed off too early and missed her dose.
Before long, Laney returned carrying a glass of water and the medication.
“Here's her medicine,”
Supporting Elissa against his chest, Ernest took what he needed from Laney.
With a gentle coax, he urged, “Take these. You'll feel a lot better soon.”
Elissa parted her lips, letting him place the pills on her tongue. He brought the glass up and helped her drink,
making sure she swallowed every drop.
“You may leave now.” Ernest signaled Laney to leave.
“Yes, sir.” Laney collected the empty glass and left them alone.
Ernest eased Elissa back onto the bed and tucked the blanket around her with careful hands.
He wasn’t much for talking, but now he held onto her hand and tried his best to find the right words, his voice
uncertain but honest.
