Chapter 1627:

After a long pause, he finally muttered, “What do you know?”

“You don’t call the cops because deep down, you know nothing will change,” Jesse replied. “With bruises like

yours, maybe your dad gets a warning or a couple of days locked up. But when he gets out, he'll make you pay

for it.” The boy's lips tightened, just barely betraying a flicker of emotion.

He hadn't expected anyone to understand what he was thinking.

“And with your dad being the only one raising you, and no mom in the picture, the police will hesitate even

more,” Jesse added calmly.

His words seemed to echo through the air, and for the first time, the boy's guarded eyes wavered.

“Don’t look atlike that,” Jesse said plainly. “I looked up your information this afternoon. | know your mom left

when you were born.”

“Then you should understand... | don’t have any other option,” the boy replied, opening up just a little.

“You feel stuck because you're not choosing,” Jesse said simply. “The ointment helps the pain. Telling someone

helps stop the abuse. One call might not be enough, but if you report it every the hits you, someone will

eventually help you get out of that situation.”

Jesse said firmly, “Mr. Shaw can lend you a hand, and so can Nina and I.”

The boy shook his head. “Thanks, but I'm okay,” he said, his voice polite but firm. He wasn’t in the mood for a

long debate with his father. If his father decided to lash out, he figured he could take it. It would pass quickly.

Trying to outwit his father would only complicate things.

Jesse noticed the boy's resolve and realized pushing further wouldn't help.

“Please express my thanks to your sister,” the boy said after a moment's pause. Jesse met his gaze, keeping

things light. “She’d probably rather hear your nthan a thank you.”

The boy’s eyes sharpened. “You could find out about my mom, so you likely know my nalready.”

“I do,” Jesse admitted plainly, not dodging the truth. “But Nina won't like it unless it comes straight from you.

She'd say I'm crossing a line and disrespecting you.”

A flicker of surprise crossed the boy's face. After a long silence, he said,

“Damian Bryant.”

“Thanks,” Jesse replied with a nod.

They left it at that. Both were young but carried thoughts far beyond their years, each with a clear path in mind

for their lives.

Roughly thirty minutes later, the boy’s father walked Kristian downstairs.

Seeing this, Damian quietly headed home.

Nina wanted to chase after him to say goodbye, but his quick steps made her pause. Instead, she turned to

Jesse. “Why didn’t you ask him to stay?”

“Why would I?” Jesse asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I didn’t get to say goodbye,” Nina said, her tone serious. Jesse shrugged. “He probably doesn’t care to hear it.”

“Jesse!” Nina's voice carried a hint of frustration.

“Con, let's go home,” Jesse said gently, taking her hand. “I've got something you'll want to hear.”
