Chapter 1628:

“I don’t care,” Nina said, glancing back at the elevator with a touch of sadness.

“You promised I'd get to say goodbye if he left.”

“Don’t you want his name?” Jesse asked, keeping his tone casual.

“No!” she snapped.

“Really?” Jesse sounded surprised.

“Don’t act like | don’t know you snooped on Uncle Kristian’s computer all afternoon,” Nina said, half-annoyed,

half-playful. “If I'm going to know his name, it should cfrom him.”

Jesse kept walking, his small frsteady. “He toldhimself.”

“Really?” Nina's face lit up instantly.

“Yup.”

“What's his nthen?”

“Didn’t you just say you didn’t want to know?”

“I do!” Her voice softened, almost pleading.

Jesse grinned, teasing her. “What if | made it up?”

“No way,” Nina said confidently. “You'd never tricklike that.”

“Let's get hfirst,” Jesse said, holding off. “I'll tell you before bed.”

“Jesse,” she whined.

“Nope.”

“Best brother ever?”

“Not falling for it.”

“You'd let your sweet little sister stay upset?” Nina tugged at his arm, her eyes big and pleading. “If you keep it

from me, I'll be in a funk all day.”

“The day’s almost done,” Jesse teased with a smirk. “A little gloom might help you feel all the feels.”

Nina puffed out her cheeks, annoyed. “You're the worst, humph!”

Jesse's smile grew, a soft warmth in his eyes. He was wise beyond his years in many ways, but when it cto

playful bickering with Nina, he let his inner child shine.

“I'm done with you,” Nina said, freeing her hand and running to Kristian.

The three of them headed htogether.

Once they arrived, Jesse turned to Kristian. “How'd things go with that man?”

“He’ll be tied up for the next few years,” Kristian said.

Kids often see things at face value, but adults dig deeper to the heart of matters.

“What about that boy?” Nina asked, her focus solely on him. “Who's going to take him to school or cook for

him?”

“He’s always gotten to school on his own and handles cooking too,” Kristian said, his usual cool demeanor

softening as he spoke to them. “With his dad busy, it might be easier for him.”

Nina went quiet for a moment.

Kristian noticed. “You okay?” he asked gently.
