Chapter 1637:
“Damian!” she called out, bounding over to him with a beaming smile. Her whole presence radiated pure joy.
Damian's expression stayed calm, and he simply gave her a quiet nod.
“Did you eat yet? We're going out to play later! Where do you want to go? How about an amusement park? Are
you scared of ghosts?” Nina buzzed with excitement, her words flowing nonstop as she chattered beside him.
Strangely, instead of being annoyed, Damian felt something warm settle inside him—like a faint glimmer of
sunlight had finally reached his chest.
When he didn’t respond, Nina blinked at him and asked carefully, “You're not interested in what I'm saying?”
“No,” Damian replied. He was so quiet and withdrawn.
Nina scooted closer, speaking sincerely. “If one day you don’t want to heartalk, just tellto stop.”

When Jesse finally cdownstairs, freshly showered, he saw Nina and Damian on the couch, chatting away—or
more accurately, Nina chatting while Damian sat in silence.
He glanced over at Kristian, who was calmly watching financial news, and asked under his breath, “How did you
get him to chere?”
“I walked over and brought him back,” Kristian replied dryly.
Jesse didn’t know what to say to that. Why did Kristian always sound so much like his dad?
He didn’t press the issue and quietly sat next to him, watching the financial news too. He couldn't really follow
what was going on, but he liked picking up the formal tone and serious expressions adults used.
“Want to watch cartoons?” Kristian asked, teasing him a little, treating Jesse like the kid he still technically was.
“No, thanks,” Jesse replied, polite as ever.

“You don’t have any regular kid hobbies?” Kristian asked, genuinely curious about what went on in this boy’s
mind.
“Puzzles, Lego, programming,” Jesse listed.
Kristian pressed his lips into a thin line and didn’t comment further.
Jesse, watching him sit there with that unreadable face, couldn't help but wonder.
What had gone down between Kristian and his mom before? Why had they ended up divorced?
“Mr. Shaw,” Jesse began, testing the waters.
“Yeah?” Kristian answered casually.
“Why did you make Nina your goddaughter?” Jesse asked, already suspecting the answer. “When did you meet
my mom?”
“We've known each other a long time,” Kristian said, a flicker of nostalgia crossing his face. “As for Nina...
guess.”
“Because she’s lovely?” Jesse asked seriously.
Kristian smiled. “That's part of it.”
Jesse didn’t say anything.
