Chapter 1641:

At first, Kristian thought Jesse was just dodging the rides with clever excuses.

But after watching him join in so many times, Kristian’s doubts faded.

He had no idea Jesse was a master at hiding his true feelings.

By six o'clock, the winter sun dipped low. After dinner, Kristian drove the kids home.

Nina walked Damian to his door, her smile bright. “Let’s hang out again tomorrow, Damian!”

“Sure,” Damian replied, his voice even but kind.

Nina’s grin widened, surprised by how easily he agreed.

Jesse's eyes flicked to Damian, then to Kristian, catching the moment with a spark of curiosity.

Later that night, after nine, as Nina settled into bed, Jesse approached Kristian with a question nagging at him.

“Why does Damian suddenly agree to hang out with Nina?” he asked.

Kristian gave a sly smile. “That's a secret.”

Jesse pressed on. “Where's his dad?”

When they dropped Damian off, the apartment was dark, empty, like no one had been there in a while.

“He’s caught up with work,” Kristian said plainly. “He’s not around much.”

Damian's dad had lost his company to tough times in the market. Staying hmade him feel helpless, and his

frustration grew. After Damian’s mom left them, he held a grudge against his son too.

But Kristian had suggested a way to turn things around, and Damian’s dad was trying to make it work.

As for Damian, his dad seemed to have no plans to step up.

“What about Damian?” Jesse asked, concern creeping into his voice.

Kristian glanced toward Nina's room. “I'll look out for him.”

Jesse blinked, surprised. “You will?”

From what he knew, Kristian wasn’t one to get involved in other people’s problems. Why would he care?

“Is it because of Nina?” Jesse asked.

“Partly,” Kristian admitted.

At first, it was about Nina—helping Damian so she'd have a friend to enjoy her twith. But as Kristian got to

know Damian, he saw something special in him.

Maybe the kid was worth guiding.

“How will you take care of him?” Jesse asked, curiosity piqued.

“Ill raise him like your parents raised you,” Kristian said simply. “I’ve got tto spare.”

Jesse fell quiet, his thoughts tangled. How much did Kristian care for his mom? Just because Nina liked Damian,

the man was willing to step in and help raise him.

“Are you ever going to get married?” Jesse asked, stepping into rare personal territory.

Kristian’s calm eyes didn’t waver. “No plans for that.”
