Chapter 1638:
He felt helpless, uncertain how to ease her pain.
After hesitating, Ernest slipped off his shoes and climbed onto the bed. He wrapped his arms around her, lying
beside her with a gentle hold.
Nerves prickled at him.
Even though they had Locke, his memories of that distant night were hazy. The details had faded so much that
he could hardly recall anything at all. This was the first the held her so closely, fully present and aware.
Was he crossing a line by taking advantage of her vulnerability?
His throat tightened with uncertainty, but before doubt could win, Elissa shifted in her sleep and tucked herself
closer into his arms.

A gentle smile crept onto Ernest's lips. She needed him here. Right now, being there for her meant more than
worrying about appearances.
Later that night, Elissa woke abruptly.
Her stomach’s loud protest had roused her from sleep.
The soft bedside lamp still glowed—a small comfort that Ernest had left on for her.
When her eyes finally adjusted, she discovered she was nestled tightly against him. Color rushed to her cheeks.
She distinctly remembered him sitting at her side earlier. How had she ended up wrapped in his arms like this?
Her stomach let out another grumble, making her cringe. She tried to shift his arm away as quietly as she could.
“You're awake?”
A low voice broke the silence.
With her face burning, she looked up at him and replied, “Y-yeah.”
Ernest sat upright, his gaze searching her features. “Your eyes look much better now. Are you feeling alright?
Does your head still hurt at all?”
She shook her head, still a little shy. “No... but | am hungry.”
“Oh.” A quiet laugh slipped from him as he reached over and ruffled her hair.
“Alright, I hear you. Sit tight—I'll have something brought up.”
“Wait!” Elissa caught his arm, flustered. “You don’t need to do all that. | can find something for myself.”
It was already late, and she hated causing trouble.
“You don’t need to worry.” Ernest gave a small shake of his head. “That's what the staff is here for—to take care
of you.”
He'd already asked the staff to stay awake tonight, just in case Elissa woke up needing anything.
Elissa heard his low voice from the hallway, speaking to the staff just outside. With him occupied, she slipped
into the bathroom to splash water on her face and comb her hair before stepping back out.
Ernest waited by the door, hands in his pockets. “They're getting it ready. Want to wait downstairs?”
“Sure.”
The house had grown quiet, the night slowly shifting into early morning. Down in the dining room, Elissa sat at
the table and ate quietly, with Ernest seated beside her.
