“Letask you something.” He folded his hands together. “Dr. Hayes, have you already heard about my
background?”

“I did.” Colleen nodded. “My mom filledin. How about me? What have you heard?”
“Just the basics,” he responded with a slight grin and a brief pause.
For a moment, he gathered his thoughts. “You finished top of your class at the University of Blathe—you're a
doctor, too. | imagine that keeps your schedule pretty packed.”
“That's right.” Colleen nodded, her tone steady.
“Okay, so here's what's on my mind.” He nudged his glasses higher. “Since this is a blind date and we're
ultimately looking for a life partner, there are a few things I'd like to get straight from the start.”
“Of course.” Colleen nodded, a bit surprised by his directness. “Please, go ahead.”

That much, Colleen already knew.
Her family had told her that the man she was meeting shared a similar background. Like her older brother, he
was expected to look after the family business.
“Dr. Hayes.” His gaze lingered on Colleen. “This may be our first meeting, but | already think highly of you. Still, |
want to be upfront. The thing is, I'd like my wife to leave her career after marriage to focus on family. Would you
be willing to consider that?”
A wave of surprise left Colleen momentarily speechless.
“I apologize.” He offered an uneasy smile. “I realize this sounds sudden, especially since this is our first meeting,
but I believe honesty is best.”

“Honestly, I've never planned to quit working.”
All those years of study had brought her a doctorate. If she stayed at the University of Blathe, she could have
been their youngest associate professor in a few years.
Giving up that future for the sake of a man or for marriage seemed unthinkable.
No part of her was willing to make such a trade.
“Dr. Hayes...” A hint of disappointment showed on his face.
“Are you sure you won't reconsider? With what | earn, you wouldn’t need to worry about a thing. | can give you a
life with no stress about money.”
“That isn’t something | want.” Colleen’s frown appeared, cutting in.
Those words only made her more certain she was not interested. She shook her head, keeping her smile polite.
“It’s clear our views are different. Maybe it’s best to stop here.”
He didn’t seem convinced. “Different views? What are you getting at?”
