Chapter 1634:

Her laughter was so infectious that Damian couldn’t take his eyes off her. That bright, innocent smile of hers felt

like a soothing remedy for the pain he carried. Nina laughed so hard her eyes sparkled with tears.

“Isnt that hilarious?”

His face stayed serious as he mumbled, “Not really.”

“Really? Not even a little?” she pressed.

“Nope,” he replied flatly.

“Don’t worry, I'll ask Uncle Kristian for better jokes soon,” Nina said with a hopeful grin. She was always full of

sunshine, never letting gloom settle in.

“Do you like silly dad jokes or ones that make you roar with laughter?”

“I don't like any of them,” Damian said, brushing her off completely.

Undeterred, Nina stepped closer, her voice earnest. “You're acting just like my brother. Keep that up, and you'll

be a grumpy old man before you're even grown!”

Damian's eyes flickered upward, a spark of feeling stirring inside him.

“Oh, Damian,” Nina added, her big eyes brimming with warmth. “Can you try smiling? I've never seen you do it.”

“I don’t smile,” he answered, his tone cold and brief.

Nina’s grin widened, bright and inviting. “I can teach you how—it’s easy!”

Watching this lively, sweet girl, Damian felt a sudden urge to tousle her hair. If he had a sister like her, he'd

guard her with everything he had. But deep down, he knew getting too close would only make it harder to let go.

She didn’t belong in his world, and she wasn’t his to keep.

Nina, oblivious to his thoughts, kept trying to teach him. “Just lift the corners of your mouth like this!”

Damian hid his feelings and gently took her hand, guiding her toward the door.

“Are you coming outside with us?” Nina asked, her voice bubbling with excitement. He stayed silent.

At the doorway, he saw Jesse and Kristian waiting. He passed Nina to them with a polite but distant tone. “Sir,

I've got things to do later. | can’t stay with her.”

“Is he mad at me?” Nina asked Jesse, her voice small.

Jesse glanced at Damian and teased, “Yup.”

“No, I'm not,” Damian said quickly, almost instinctively.

“Then why won't you come?” Nina asked, her eyes searching his. “If you're busy, Jesse and | can help you!”

“I'm heading inside,” Damian told Kristian, turning back to his room.

He closed the door and stood still, leaning against it.

Nina’s voice carried through, asking Jesse and Kristian why Damian didn’t like her, wondering if she’d messed up

somehow. Damian listened until their footsteps faded and the elevator dinged. Only then did he move, retreating

deeper into his room.

Like any kid, he longed for friends and warmth, but he knew letting warmth in was easy; losing it hurt too much.

It was safer to never let it start.

Nina, still confused, turned to Jesse and Kristian. “Did | annoy him?”

“Yup,” Jesse said plainly.
